Blocked in window, Labrousse

Quite a few years ago I made a sketch  of a blocked in window in the hamlet in Limousin, where my father in law comes from, intending at some stage to turn it into a quilt. As usual, it just stayed as an idea, until this opportunity came up. I stencilled it with paintstiks. I find it's not as interesting as I thought it was going to be, but I'm glad that I tried it out in the end.

  1. What an interesting subject to choose. Perhaps if the blocks of stone round the window were a bit larger in comparison to the other stones it might have had a greater impact. I might have been tempted to colour the 'mortar' in the window itself a bit more than on the outside of the window as well.

  2. You have made it beautifully Jinnie, but I guess that the lack of variety in colour and texture is the challeng with this image. Nevertheless, I like the non-window window idea.

  3. Nice idea, the windowless window. I agree in that I feel that your piece is in waiting.....maybe that focal point or splash of something.

  4. Beautifully executed, as usual. Sometimes you just have to give these things a go 🙂

  5. Interesting piece Jinnie, perhaps more contrast in the colours or the stones outlined in a darker colour for more depth. I have a similar picture waiting to be 'created' with fabrics!

  6. I love the idea - a 'non' window! It's a very soft piece and you have to wonder, like Allison's window, what stories lie behind the window being bricked up (not literally 'bricked' up - but I couldn't write 'stoned' up!).

  7. My husband thought that it would be better if the stones were darker, but I think that it would be just as boring if they were. There is definitely not enough variety or anything of interest in the image. Perhaps I should add a vine or wisteria or something. It has made me realise that I should be wary of ideas that I have had for a long time without filtering them a little more critically. I have just finished another quilt that has the same problem: I like the design, but made the mistake of not including enough variety in the size of the motifs. I have a good idea for a remedy though. I think that both quilts have been a good lesson, and maybe I will pay more attention next time and not (at least try not to) make the same mistake. I find that the challenges where I don't really feel I inspired turn out better, as I abstract something and work on it, rather than using an idea directly from my head like this time.

  8. Very interesting Jinnie - you turned it on its head by doing a windowless window. Probably a bit of colour in a vine or some other interest would have been a good idea and I also like Linda's idea that she had.

  9. I like the colour that you were able to get with the paintsticks. I would just make the frame a wee bit darker (love the top left brick) that's all. Monochromatic works.

  10. I can imagine this with a creeper or vine across it and agree with everyone's comments that it needs some colour somewhere without losing the great idea of a bricked in window . Such an interesting take on "Windows".
