A Door in Brittany

Every since I remembered this picture I have been anticipating someone's reaction to it - with glee.

Coincidentally I had already printed this on fabric a long time ago when I was experimenting with various methods.  And luckily I found it again! The frame around it was also a bit serendipitous.  I had been racking my brain to come up with something and then I remembered that I had done a large square in a class, learning a weaving technique - about 10 years ago!  So I cut it up and thought it did perfectly for this.

I'm looking forward to seeing all your doors.

  1. Great door and lovely colours, they work well together. Oh, and the joy of using stuff from your treasure trove and likewise for using techniques learnt years ago. What fun!

  2. I agree. A perfect match. Love the rich blues.

  3. Nice to be able to use pieces you have stored for just the 'right' moment. Well done for remembering you have them, let alone where you put them! The blue outer woven area really helps you notice the figure that wold otherwise be not ver significant. Just shows what colour choices can do! Claire xxx

  4. I agree with Claire, that the blue of the woven frame is perfect with the blue of the coat. It must be satisfying to have used pieces from your stash like that: it's almost as if you knew exactly what you would need in the future!

  5. Aha, now we know what your teaser meant! How well these two elements work together - almost made for each other. An argument for holding on to odd samples and scraps...? (as if I need any encouragement!!!) I like the proportions as well. Hope you're pleased, Dianne. Hilary

  6. I think no one has identified the figure. Hilary.

  7. Oh my goodness - I think it's me! Haha! That provoked some lovely memories of Dianne, our friend, Rosie, and I spending time together in Brittany years ago. We are all keen photographers and it was a dream location. Remember the fresh seafood?! Thanks, Dianne, Hilary

    2. I did reply to Dianne, that I wondered if it was Hilary. I think I must have pressed the wrong button and it didn't register!

    3. Right, I have gone back to the folder and found where we were. It was the 1st June, 2010 and we were in Douarnenez, Brittany. And would you belief it, I was taking the picture that Dianne teased us with! Even Rosie took the same corner! Great minds think alike. So now you know. H

    4. What a very funny story. I thought that the pictures were taken at two different times of the year! You look like you are wearing a ski jacket Hilary, but the flowers are clearly in bloom. So thanks for the explanation:0).

    5. I hadn't noticed the flowers till you mentioned them Mai-Britt. They even match the other blue in the frame.

  8. This shouts Brittany Dianne, the colours are wonderful. And fancy seeing Hilary with a camera at the ready!

  9. Great! I like the idea of looking at someone through a frame who's looking at something through a frame and... well, we now know the who, the where and the what... but not everyone will and that will have them wondering.

  10. I had no idea that the figure in the picture is Hilary !It has been so cleverly done as I feel as if I am walking through a dark passageway at the end of which I see the door and wall (and Hilary!) bathed in sunlight . Using Hilary's coat colour in the frame gives cohesion to the piece.

  11. A lovely piece indeed. Isn't it great when one uses a technique learned some time ago and then one can use it going forward. I do like your door and the frame of blues which really sets it off.

  12. You've managed to get a perfect match on the blue colour so that Hilary's jacket really takes your eye into the picture. If you had just described it to me I would have thought that the dominant blue surround would have overwhelmed the inner picture, but in fact the opposite happens. Great memory to encapsulate in a quilt too.

  13. Love the back-ground of Blues - very clever to use something you had done in a class - it 'fitted' perfectly! And 'putting' Hilary into the picture too.
