Quebec's first-ever SAQA exhibition

Vinyasa, Helena Scheffer

Helena Scheffer and Heather Dubreuil are delighted to have their work included in Quebec's first-ever SAQA exhibition.

As many of you know, SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) is an international group devoted to the promotion of the art quilt.  Its 3000-plus members include several of us at 12 by the dozen. The Central Canada region, with more than 130 members, has put together a juried group show which has already been seen in six Ontario galleries.

The twenty works by 16 artists celebrate the wide range of technique and subject seen in this contemporary art form.

Synthesis II will be shown at the Kirkland Library, 17100 Hymus Blvd., Kirkland QC, February 8 - 27. Hours are 10 am - 9 pm Monday to Friday, and 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday.

A vernissage will be held on Sunday, February 9, from 2 - 4 pm.

  1. Congrats Heather and Helena. Great news for you both. 130 members in the central Canada region is a good number. How easy is it to get galleries to accept textile art in general? We are way behind here.

I left SAQA because it seemed to remote, too complicated and expensive to enter any of the challenges. The European branch has never really taken off as there are too many languages in the region. This doesn't make it easy to communicate with each other.

  2. Admittedly SAQA is quite US-centric, and I think you have developed alternative forums in the UK. Keep in mind that the eastern Canada region includes all of Quebec and Ontario. It would be a 6-hour drive for me to attend a meeting in Toronto, but I have entered shows based in Toronto without actually attending.

The galleries that have hosted Synthesis II are mostly community galleries, not commercial galleries. They are often located in government buildings. Community galleries welcome art quilts, in my experience, but to get fibre into a commercial gallery in Quebec is almost unheard of. Ontario is a little more accessible. Helena's work has been accepted into the Canadian Guild of Crafts, which is well-deserved recognition, but that is a rather specialized gallery.

    1. That should read Central Canada region, not eastern Canada region.

  3. Congratulations, Heather and Helena!! So thrilled for both of you! Will your pieces be for sale? What sizes are they? What a wonderful opportunity for more people to see and appreciate fiber art!

    1. Thanks Venetta! The pieces all measure 20" x 24", with either vertical or horizontal orientation. There are no prices on the labels but I suspect most of them would be for sale if one were to contact the artist. I will post photos of the show once it's hung.

    3. Correction. The Synthesis II pieces are for sale. The wall labels have (very tiny) prices indicated.
