... with apologies to Alex Janvier.
Just as with the title of this post I've adopted a very light-hearted approach to this challenge, I hope you'll forgive me. Goodness I love the fluidity of the lines he creates and his colours are stunning but could I replicate any of this in fabric? When I found myself wanting to paint rather than stitch I knew I had to look sideways for inspiration. Enter this work:

Inter-tribal Drum Song - Alex Janvier |

It was the 'inter-tribal' bit that did it for me. I'm a contemporary quilter through and through so why have I recently been dabbling with needle turn applique or visiting a wonderful exhibition on
Welsh wholecloth quilts? These styles all have the same roots but it doesn't stop us, here in the UK at least, from associating with others interested in the same aspect of the broader genre - quilting tribes so to speak. It was this thinking that gave birth to Inter-tribal quilt song. Each oval is cut from a sample or, in one instance, a JQ to represent some of the different quilting tribes. I thought that I'd be able to couch some of Janvier's wonderfully fluid curves but was defeated, though looking again at the photo of the original I'm wondering whether something could be achieved using reverse machine applique ...

Brilliant interpretation! I like the piece and the reasoning behind it.
ReplyDeleteI can only agree with Linda and the title is priceless - I can sing along to that.
ReplyDeleteVery clever. Wow! I do like what you have created.
ReplyDeleteNice, you stepped out of the box and truly used Janvier as an inspiration to do your own thing.
ReplyDeleteI echo all the other comments. Great job on a unique and clever piece!
ReplyDeleteI can only repeat what has been said. I love it.
ReplyDeleteLove your colours and your inspired rendition of his piece that inspired you. The black and white you have used has given it a certain zing that brings the whole piece together. A really pleasing piece.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your wonderful explanation of your process and your title!! Love how you incorporate your works into his style...totally original!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you've been influenced by his work, but have made it totally your own.
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting interpretation of that particular artwork of Janviers . Using colours which are different from his was truly inspired and works so well . I think that you certainly created lovely curves with that (?)couched thread running through the design, causing an adhesiveness to the whole piece. very well done
ReplyDeleteWish I had seen this way of interpreting his style. Linda. Inspired and the title is perfect. Very 'contemporary'. Love it. Lots of thought went into this.
