Last report from Dianne: Both of her pieces have SOLD and at end of day yesterday they were the only two pieces to sell in the whole show. Her colourful study of birches was purchased by the organizers as a thank you gift for the honorary speaker, Monique Polak, an author and teacher of creative writing. This is especially appropriate as Dianne used text on paper as the bark of the trees.

The show runs two more days so possibly we'll see more sales before closing.

We were two of several fibre artists on show, Meta MacLean being the third. A fourth made an assemblage of a 3-D modelled fabric dress on a background of cast paper. Another artist in the group, Deanne Hall Habeeb, does fabric collage but showed a painting this time around.

Hudson Artists show, April 19 - 21

Shown here are some of the 200 works by 33 artists that will be on display at the annual Spring Show of the Hudson Artists Association.

Michele Meredith and Heather Dubreuil are pleased to have their recent work included in the show, which will feature a variety of media, including stained glass, sculpture, collage, fibre and mixed media as well as watercolour, acrylic and oil painting.

The vernissage happens on Friday evening, 7:30 - 9:30, and continues Saturday and Sunday, 10 - 5. A painting will be raffled off to benefit NOVA Hudson. Refreshments are available. Unframed works and greeting cards will also be for sale. On Saturday, from 1 - 3 p.m., Sue Rhodes will demo her scratchboard technique.

Banners for the Soulanges Canal

Recently, both Heather and I were selected as artists to produce artwork that will

 be transformed into banners for the Soulanges Canal Bike Path in our region. There will be 54 artworks for the 27 posts along the path and a vernissage will be held on May 3rd near the canal to meet all the artists.

 

My original idea was to take pictures of  local barns in our area especially since some of the nicest ones now have recently been demolished but later chose a more spring like blue and yellow abstract done during my online class this winter with Elizabeth Barton.

 I found the class quite productive making one piece each week for the five weeks as well as trying to keep up with all the sketching and design homework. We have our local Hudson Artists Spring Show coming up so will be able to show some of these new pieces there.

CROSS - CURRENTS

I have just completed a two day workshop with our very own Rosalie Dace who spends more time overseas these days so it was a privilege to be able to get her to run a workshop and attend.

This is my piece, not completely finished but pretty close. Whole cloth, skinny lilac insert, lilac thermofax cross screen print with the triangles naively fused and stitched on top.  I found I had to quilt the rest of the piece more than I thought to balance with the heaviness running thru the middle.  To finish off I may run some beads thru the lilac skinny and add a thread of darker beads running thru the triangles.  Most unusual colours for me but am very happy with it.

Dianne and Heather are delighted to have had work juried into the annual show of the Women's Art Society of Montreal.

The show will be held in Tudor Hall, on the top floor of Ogilvy's, 1307 St. Catherine Street West, Montreal. It opens at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 4, continues until 4 p.m. Monday, April 8, and may be seen during regular store hours. 

The vernissage is on Thursday evening, 6 - 8 p.m. Heather will be "sitting" at the show on Friday afternoon, and Dianne on Saturday afternoon. We would love to see you there!

More boathouses

For the Encore challenge, I went back to the Structure theme and made a piece based on a photo of boathouses I had taken this past summer.

Near Dianne's cottage is a marshy inlet lined with dozens of these "structures". Their jaunty colours and skewed angles are so typical of maritime buildings.

In the last couple of weeks I have continued to explore this subject.

Boathouses #2 has been sent to the SAQA annual fundraiser auction.

This postcard (8" x 6") was made for a silent auction that will be held at the SAQA conference in Santa Fe this April. It will be matted to a 6.5" x 4.5" format. I'm really looking forward to attending this conference (my first) because I will get a coaching session with Leni Levenson Weiner on "Finding Your Artistic Voice".

Because I'm on the executive, I get to show a couple of pieces in the lobby of the community center for the month of April.

The show itself runs April 19 - 21, and Michele and I will be among a group of about 35 exhibitors.

This series is all in the 12" x 12" format, and uses low-immersion dyes for the sky, arashi dyes for the water, and more-or-less solid hand-dyes for the buildings and walkways.

Something to celebrate

Following on the previous post we are proud to announce we have a website of our own.

Here you can see the results of the first round of quilts we made grouped into themes and into collections made by each member.  It is fascinating to see them laid out on pages.

We will continue on our blog with the day to day sharing ideas and thoughts related to our challenges and textiles in general.

An idea that is blocked

Seeing Phil's 12 pieces together is such a treat.  Linda B has been working in the background (and I spotted her 'secret') trying to make a page for each person's little quilts - pulling them together under your name instead of the them.  BUT... Blogger doesn't support more than 20 pages - yet.  I'm hoping that they will look at this and offer us more before we run out.  You can see what this would be like if you go the the right hand column and under THE TWELVE you will see names that are grey.  Those are pages we have created.  Unfortunately I had to delete my page to create the Encore! page - all the latest quilts are up on their page.

We'll have to come up with something at some stage because each new challenge will mean deleting another page.

AFRICAN CONNECTION

My challenge within a challenge is now complete.  For those that may not remember I created pieces using your theme within my theme, African Connection.

Here they are together, just pinned, not finalised, as I am still not sure of placing and the way they will be 'held' together.

 



The photo is not great as I have had to take this inside as its is raining, but you get the idea.

 

You may ask where is the thirteenth block.  My challenge was 'fresh' and I ran with graffiti using the themes in writing and that block was going to be my 'label' .... all panned out!

Encore - Broken Dishes

Phew - I don't think I've ever been so close to a deadline - it's 11.38 pm here in the UK! Yesterday evening I stencilled the dish on to my background fabric and couldn't get to my machine to piece then cut apart this quilt until late this evening.And even now I see that in my haste I've transposed a couple of the pieces!


My encore is linked to my Fine Living piece. The sentiment that that piece brought to the fore has niggled at me and continues to wander around in my mind. Then I thought of the quilt block 'broken Dished' and thought of the broken lives of the clay miners and others who work in desperate conditions so that we can have our 'Home Comforts'.

The piece was created in the same way as Fine Living:

The quilt was then cut apart and put back together again to create a broken dish!

Ex-centric

There is a little bit of cheating with this piece.  It is an encore to a piece that has not been made and is   still an idea in my head!  I did a course with Rayna Gilman and we sewed lots of little pieces together in her style.  I then framed it in purple and after looking at it for a few years decided to quilt it up.  That was when I had my aha moment and so I cut the piece into 16 squares, then cut out the largest circle I could manage.  The circles, will of course, be the main event - on a white background with somewhat similar quilting.  This was a fun exercise.  Thanks Michele.
