One of the keys to the Shaker style is simplicity or minimalism. Not my style at all!! But I did realize that the front of our house is a classic Shaker style. I'll put in a picture at the bottom.
I always found it intriguing that they hung their chairs on the wall when they weren't in use. I guess there was no stopping for a coffee/tea break to play with games on one's ipad.
So I have kept this piece as minimal as possible. No stitching except to put on the facing. I hemmed and hawed a lot about that but decided I'd try it out.
and the house:
A fun piece Dianne.
ReplyDeleteI really like your upside down chair. Simplicity nailed! As to why they hung them out of the way, yes, I can imagine there was not time for R&R. Where would be without chairs in lockdown and all the sewing projects that need attention! Funny that you now see your house through new eyes now :-)
ReplyDeleteAs Amanda has said simplicity at its extreme but very striking. Is there no quilting at all?
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing the chairs neatly put away when we have toured Shaker museums. It made the rooms very easy to sweep! I too like the simplicity of this, though I might have been tempted to stitch round the chair.
ReplyDeleteThe essence of simplicity! Pared down to the absolute minimum. Nice one, Dianne. The image stays in my head. As I contemplate having a major turn out of all our clutter accumulated over many, many years - I really appreciate their minimalist attitude!
ReplyDeleteWhat batting have you used? And is the background fused to it? No harm in trying out a no-quilt approach.
If I were to add quilting it would be vertical parallel lines in the background only to make the chair and rail 'pop' out. Hilary
Shaker simplicity nailed. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI have learned so much through this challenge and having a chair hanging on the wall is another lesson of their lives. A really nice piece.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was researching and looking at the materials, I saw a similar photo of 3 chairs hanging upside down on the wall. This work completely presenting the Shaker style, I am very impressed. It's simple, yet it fits the theme perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThat photo is what I used as my inspiration.
DeleteI was tempted to do that example too because of it's simplicity. Perhaps a bit of hand quilting on the background wouldn't be out of place but using the same colour thread. As Hilary said, it would make the chair and railing 'pop out'. Nice to see a picture of your house too.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen that photo. I like the simplicity.
ReplyDeleteThe others have said it all - I have nothing to add, except well done Diane.
