The first impression I got when I looked for Shaker buildings was the simplicity of the structures and went with my first choice "roofs and windows". I drew an abstract background of Shaker roof shapes and some walls and used fairly soft colours,, which I picked up from my research, which they seemed to use most of the time. Over this I used 12wt thread to outline three sets of windows on top of the design placing double pieces of net behind the window frames to depict window glass.

Clever idea to play around with the shapes and paler colours of the Shakers. A very pleasing piece.
ReplyDeleteLove the overlay of shapes, Patricia. You have captured the essence of the rural life and style with the simplicity that is their signature. Hilary
ReplyDeleteI like both the layout and the colour palette you have chosen for this piece. They are both evocative of Shaker Architecture but you incorporated them in a way that makes for a very individual piece.
ReplyDeleteI love what you've done to abstract the idea of the various elements of buildings. It's a great composition and I like the colours you've chosen.
ReplyDeleteWonderful piece - from the abstract design to the colours you chose . It is definitely minimalist but so well thought out . Putting the window outlines on top of the roof design made it so interesting
ReplyDeleteA very interesting interpretation of the theme, taking the essence of the Shakers but being very subtle with the interpretation. The colours feel very restful which I think the Shakers would have approved of.
ReplyDeleteA very clever piece, and I agree with everyone else, perfect stitching! The simplicity is definitely in keeping with the Shakers, though I have no idea if they would have approved of the red colour. The windows look so much like glass I had to have a second look to convince myself you hadn't used clear plastic in them.
ReplyDeleteLinda, I was wondering if you meant for this comment to go on Hilary's piece?
DeleteYou’re quite right! Not sure how I got muddled, but I’m away at the moment and doing everything on a very small screen.
DeleteThe irregular color blocking is used to create a piece that fits the theme, and the three sets of windows enhance the design concept. It's a work with depth.
ReplyDeletePatricia, it looks like you have been warming up for the next challenge - deconstructivism! I love the way you placed the roofs and windows and chose a warm and appropriate colour palette to work with.
ReplyDeleteHopefully comments on the right piece this time. I too like the colours you have chosen, and the simplicity of the shapes. It’s a very effective and peaceful piece.
ReplyDeleteAs all have said, a very peaceful-looking piece - the design and the colours. Definatly Shaker style well interpreted.
ReplyDeleteLike the others I really think this is a great piece, lovely colours and well balanced.
ReplyDeleteNice mistake Linda, it could have been me....... ;0)
