Wilhelmina Barnes-Graham
Another  previously unknown artist to me . She led an interesting life amongst groups of other artists but had a variety of styles of her own . She was varied in her work and I found it difficult to choose a particular painting or even a particular style . In the end I interpreted 2 of her paintings trying out different techniques . Here are the 2 paintings I selected :

The styles were very different from one another . Here are my interpretations :

I think I prefer the one on the right which is somehow gentler. For this I took a sawn off 2inch square piece of wood and used it as a stamp. The one on the left I used wool and free motion couched the lines of colour between the circles.I had good fun with both . Rosemary

  1. Glad you managed two, one was sufficient for me. Both your pieces work beautifully but the one that I am drawn to is the first as I feel it has more content. This is probably because it is in the style that I associate with you and for a very good reason.

  2. it was so hard to choose a piece for inspiration! I also prefer the big circles for its impact. i wonder if the wood block print might have been even more effective if you hadnt printed the squares in such straight lines.

  3. I too like the one with the big circles - love the vibrant colours and as always your quilting is always an inspiration. You have interpreted her work so well in this one, so well done

  4. Two pieces! We obviously have something in common as you have straightened up W B-G's shapes, something I too was tempted by!
If I had to choose I think I'd go with the first piece, if only because the second is almost too regular. (Can't believe I'm saying that because I love the effect of the crosss cut print.)

  5. Lovely interpretation of the blue/circles - I like the way you have the lines to connect all the dots so to speak! I like the second piece too, Rosemary, but then, I like organized patterns.

  6. You've been busy! I can't make up my mind which one I prefer. I like the quilting and colours of the first one, but I like the simple shapes and adore the print of the second. I would love to see what that wood block print would look like overprinted in another colour.

  7. You put us to shame, Rosemary, but it looks as if you had fun and that's what this is all about - fun and stretching ourselves. I prefer the first for the vibrancy and the mix of scale brought together with the lines. Brilliant quilting. As Helena said, I would have preferred the block printing to have been squiggly - more alive...? H
