Fuschia - inspired by Pink and Flame, 1958

I was absolutely delighted to discover Wilhelmina Barnes-Graham's work and to read about her life. There were so many of her paintings that I found inspiring but the one that captured my heart was this one, Pink and Flame, gouache on paper, from 1958.
Mine is also inspired by the dazzling colours of the fuschia flowers that are in bloom now. After an extremely long winter, colour is what I need right now!

  1. You have captured the colours beautifully and you have certainly mastered the art of collage & stitching. Very striking.

  3. These are just wonderfully vibrant colours which you have captured so well in your piece. This technique is interesting . Do you put appliqué glue on the back of fabric pieces and then cut snippets until you are satisfied with the overall effect ?

    1. I use felt as the base, then cover it with Misty Fuse, then put down small pieces of fabric, iron it, then put tulle over the top so the needle doesn’t catch on the edges, then quilt free hand.

  5. You nailed those colours, Helena! I wish I could see this in 'the flesh' to see the quilting - I can see snatches and it looks fascinating. As a matter of interest, do you make a 16" plain quilt and then collage all those lovely pieces of fabric on top? I suspect it isn't quite as easy as some might think, getting the balance and spread of colour just right. H

    1. I just posted my method in response to Rosemary. By the way Hilary, I don’t get comments directly in my inbox anymore, so never see them when they arrive. I have to check the blog for comments now. Why is that? Did I get bumped?
