Storm 1

As I was driving home from the grocery store one day - 3 months ago - I was taken by the black clouds that were building in the sky, and the bright green of the spring time trees below them.  And then I got home to see Colleen's post with the colour grey!  So I knew then what I would do.  I also had in my head the memory of a roadside scene in South Africa of an ominous sky over a golden field.

So this is the first of a series I think.  The others are still in my head.

And here in Montreal this morning it is a grey day with rain forecast -  a great day to be sitting here looking at all the great interpretations of the colour.

  1. You sure came up with the perfect ominous sky fabric. I assume that is one of your hand-dyes. Good choice of variegated grey thread.

  2. Love it. You have captured the African storm clouds to perfection - especially when you see it approaching from a distance with the typical sun drenched colour in the foreground. We saw something very similar on a trip back from Bloemfontein a couple of weeks ago.

  3. Wow. This is one of my favourite light situations - I have long wanted to capture this combination of dark brooding sky and the sun shining on a ripe crop. Superb piece - and what a great theme for a series. Don't wait too long!

  4. I too have been dazzled by this kind of light. Once when driving home from Vermont I pulled over on the highway to try and capture it with my camera. Do you think you were guided by your on-line course when you chose this scene and your approach to it?

    1. No is the answer to that Heather. I'm afraid I got very little out of her course - and from the comments each week, there were many that were having epiphanies from it! This was Jane Dunnewold's Artist Strength Training.

  6. Hw did you achieve the crumpled bottom texture and is it velvet?

    1. it's not crumpled, and it's not velvet. It's the piece of yellow that I created for the last challenge (your yellow beets) and it is very textured because I painted it until I got the right colour, and the black left little rivulets on the wet fabric. And now it's almost all used up!

  7. Beautifully captured as everybody else agrees. The simplicity of it is very striking. Please send some of those dark clouds in my direction .... we are so dry and desperate for rain.

  8. Beautiful and striking in its simplicity. The quilting is so effective and the fabric for the sky is just perfect.

  9. Very dramatic, and the perfect choice of fabrics. I have a photo in France somewhere that has this dramatic sky. Love the strength and simplicity of the piece.

  10. This is just the colour scheme I was going for in my unsuccessful attempt - I couldn't find a fabric for the sky, yours is just perfect . My inspiration was the slate grey sky over the Pennine hills, with green fields and gorse in flower - not quite the same inspiration as South Africa but a colour scheme which is universa perhaps.. I really like It.
