Exhibition News

I am happy to announce that two of my pieces, in fact my most personal and meaningful pieces, have been juried into Sacred Threads, a show in Washington DC in July. These are "Remembering my Family: A Holocaust Memorial Quilt" and "Catharsis".

Also my latest collaboration with Marion Perrault, "Globe of Light" was voted Best of Show at the annual Beaconsfield Quilters Guild show, where we also displayed our 12BTD work.

Aubergine preview

Naughty - but nice.  I can't believe I have finished two pieces and there are still weeks to go.  And to top it I have enjoyed making them.  The first was a bit of a cop-out so I challenged myself to 'try harder'.  Here's a tiny window on the two pieces.

I have finished my Straplines piece as well - and submitted it - so the die is cast.  It was very difficult to photograph.  I have found before that white is not an easy colour.  Frustrating when I know that the photograph is so important.  Time will tell - end of May is when they have said they will inform us.

12 by the Dozen at the Beaconsfield Quilters' Guild Show

Heather and I hung 21 of our pieces at the show this weekend. These were the 4 challenges from the past year: Fine Living, Threads, Jubilation and Encore by the Montreal members of our group (Heather, Helena, Dianne, Michele, Colleen, Pam and one piece from honourary guest Lauma Cenne). They were viewed with great interest by visitors and looked great. Note the black webbing straps,Hilary, made with your instructions a couple of years ago.

Piste cyclable en oeuvre

Michele posted about this project a few weeks ago, and now I'm happy to let you know about the official opening of the "Piste cyclable en oeuvre". Fifty-four artists of the region were chosen to make a piece that was then photographed and printed on a six-foot tall banner. These vinyl banners will be hung as kilometre markers all along the Soulanges bike path: fifty-four banners, back-to-back, and twenty-seven lamp posts.

About 100,000 visitors cycle, walk and roller-blade the path every year, and these banners will be installed for four years. The promoters say this is Canada's largest outdoor art display.

The original works of art will be displayed in different venues around the county all summer. The vernissage is on Friday, May 3, 6 - 10 p.m. at Pavillon Wilson, 48 rue Principale, Coteau-du-Lac, and you are invited! The gallery show continues until August 28.

Aubergine Teaser

I have been pulling out fabrics with aubergine in them plus the odd contrast.  I was amazed at how many fabrics I had with this unusual colour in them.  That dark one is the best aubergine I have seen and is also a Heide Stoll Weber fabric.  Those of you coming to Birmingham this year will have the opportunity to lust after her fabrics - expensive but some of the best hand dyes I've come cross - and you have to be at her stand on the first day for the best selection!

And just to tease - I may or may not use any of these fabrics!!!

REVISITING

I am reposting a picture of the work as I cannot remember what I called it and it is too far back.

It is 5 individual strips, 5 individual challenges , all whole cloth with various surface designs and techniques.  The first strip completed is the one on the right and the challenge was 'revolution' and my inspiration came from two pieces completed by Sheena Norquay that I saw at the Birmingham Quilt Show a few years back.

Eggplant teaser

So, we're about halfway through the three months between the announcement of our next challenge and the challenge deadline. And I've finished the piece! In fact, I finished two pieces, but rejected the first one.

Working with the assigned colour of Eggplant, I realized just how dark it is, and looked to the internet for some strategies. I found this painting online. (Is that some kind of monster casting its shadow on the building? Whatever.) I decided to take a cue from its palette.

These are the hand-dyes that ended up on my cutting board.

Eggplant and mustard might not work together on the dinner plate, but I like their complementary nature.

Festival of Quilts - Birmingham

The website for the Festival is apparently up and running with information about classes available this year.  Guild members can book from 22nd April; I think non-Guild members can start booking a week later.  Website address: www.festivalofquilts.co.uk  .   Those coming to stay this year with me should have a look at see if there is anything they fancy!

Last report from Dianne: Both of her pieces have SOLD and at end of day yesterday they were the only two pieces to sell in the whole show. Her colourful study of birches was purchased by the organizers as a thank you gift for the honorary speaker, Monique Polak, an author and teacher of creative writing. This is especially appropriate as Dianne used text on paper as the bark of the trees.

The show runs two more days so possibly we'll see more sales before closing.

We were two of several fibre artists on show, Meta MacLean being the third. A fourth made an assemblage of a 3-D modelled fabric dress on a background of cast paper. Another artist in the group, Deanne Hall Habeeb, does fabric collage but showed a painting this time around.

Hudson Artists show, April 19 - 21

Shown here are some of the 200 works by 33 artists that will be on display at the annual Spring Show of the Hudson Artists Association.

Michele Meredith and Heather Dubreuil are pleased to have their recent work included in the show, which will feature a variety of media, including stained glass, sculpture, collage, fibre and mixed media as well as watercolour, acrylic and oil painting.

The vernissage happens on Friday evening, 7:30 - 9:30, and continues Saturday and Sunday, 10 - 5. A painting will be raffled off to benefit NOVA Hudson. Refreshments are available. Unframed works and greeting cards will also be for sale. On Saturday, from 1 - 3 p.m., Sue Rhodes will demo her scratchboard technique.

Banners for the Soulanges Canal

Recently, both Heather and I were selected as artists to produce artwork that will

 be transformed into banners for the Soulanges Canal Bike Path in our region. There will be 54 artworks for the 27 posts along the path and a vernissage will be held on May 3rd near the canal to meet all the artists.

 

My original idea was to take pictures of  local barns in our area especially since some of the nicest ones now have recently been demolished but later chose a more spring like blue and yellow abstract done during my online class this winter with Elizabeth Barton.

 I found the class quite productive making one piece each week for the five weeks as well as trying to keep up with all the sketching and design homework. We have our local Hudson Artists Spring Show coming up so will be able to show some of these new pieces there.
