SHARMSIA HASSANI
To have a graffiti artist to interpret was an interesting exercise . Initially I gulped at the challenge but set about trying to understand Sharmsia's message . The lack of freedom for many women is what is reflected in her work and she sees art depicting women confined in their clothing and having little self expression as a way of portraying this .In my interpretation, taken from one of Sharmsia's images,  the face has no expression and her eye is closed but  the wind is catching some hair and there is music in her head to give her joy . The buildings are there to show where graffiti art is mainly done. Eyes may be just visible but can see much.

  1. Well interpreted. The ribbon swirls on your building fabric along with the quilted swirls all work beautifully and I love how you have created the keyboard in her 'scarf'.

  2. I thought the little wisps of hair escaping was about her little rebellion against being so covered up - her little expression of looking for freedom. Hiding her keyboard/music in her scarf around her head is a touch of genius. Finely balanced and speaking a thousand words. Great piece. Hilary

  5. You've cleverly captured so many elements of Hassani in this piece, it's a bit like a biography! Her head scarf is really nicely done. I bet she'd love this! Claire

  6. Very clever use of the piano keys in her headscarf. The buildings and eyes set off the whole tone of her work and as usual your work is immaculate as is your quilting. Well done on a really good piece of work.

  7. Super interpretation of capturing the spirit of Hassani's graffiti art Rosemary. As Claire says 'I bet she'd love this'. Very clever putting the keyboard in her scarf. Liked the movement of her hair too.
