I had a very hard time finding my inspiration in Hassani, not because I don’t admire her and her work, but because it didn’t speak to me. I was finally inspired by her many self portraits and use of blue and spirals to create this. I am not really thrilled with it, but it fulfils its mandate.
We sometimes get caught up in the confusion of interpretation/inspiration explanation which can block one. I like that you have kept it simple by using her self portrait route and personalized it.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that you didn't feel her work was speaking to you. Thanks for doing your piece but I can see your heart wasn't in it. Maybe Dianne's artist will inspire you... Hilary
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for your honesty Hilary. I completely agree with you. And I appreciate that you expressed your honest opinion. I feel that in our critiques, as women, we are always trying so hard to be nice and not say anything negative. I think Heather was the best at articulate critiques and I really miss her voice in our group.
DeleteSo true. I always find it difficult commenting. I never know what to say and it always seems to come out rather trite and banal!
DeleteLooks like I'm with you on the blue self portrait theme! I hope you really do manage such good posture when you are stitching!!!!
ReplyDeleteI try to keep upright but it is always a struggle!
DeleteNice self-portrait Helena.
ReplyDeleteI am always critical of myself as I find it very difficult to go outside the box with these quilts . I even found it difficult to connect your piece to our graffiti theme. However I always love your pieces that are purely thread on a background and I so enjoyed your self portrait, sewing away happily as we sewers all do !!
DeleteI'm sorry you didn't get any decent inspiration from this artist, but like you say sometimes an artists work leaves you cold. It has raised new questions for me.... exactly what it is about an artists work that does speak to each of us?
ReplyDeleteI hope the next artist gives you more stimulus. Claire
We can't all be inspired by every artist that are chosen and when there is a block its not easy to 'get going' so thank you for your piece and personalising it as you did so well.
ReplyDeleteSorry you wer'nt inspired by Hassani's work but you did try to do a piece anyway - thanks for 'joining in' Helena. I just hope you all enjoy 'my artist' when I have to choose someone, and I'm still racking my brain about it!
ReplyDeleteI found this one hard too and really didn't think could come up with anything. However, I'm glad for the challenge as it has helped me to try things I never would have tried otherwise,
