Puppets on a string !

This certainly created a lot more thought & procrastination. Well done Patricia on choosing an artist who used many styles & techniques throughout his career.

Although I love colour and there were a number of pieces of work that jumped out at me I decided to go with his 'inventions' style.  The sketchy drawings and the sometimes quirky/ abstract nature of these pieces allowed me to use the mediums that I enjoy most - paint and thread.

In his paintings of this style, the themes or figures often only occupy a third or slightly more of the space with the rest carrying simple marks of some form.  This large open area frightened me a bit so I reversed the scale - my puppets occupy just more than half of the space. I was a lot more comfortable with this.

I brush dyed the fabric and then worked in thread and fabric oil pastels. No new techniques for me but ...... I have only put in 2 puppets.  Even numbers do my head in so I have stretched myself here.  Before quilting I nearly put in an outline of a third one in the background, but I resisted!!

  1. I like this for many reasons, the colours, the texture and the humour in the puppets.

  2. Would it be possible, Phil, to add to your post an image from Klee's "Inventions" style for us to refer to?

  3. When I started looking at Klee's work I made a couple of, badly failed, attempts to re-create his chalky, fading, brushwork. You have succeeded andmirably - and two is good, in thisinstance!

  5. Phil you have created a really fun piece and it really looks as if you had fun too. Your figures are quirky and your quilting certainly enhances the piece. Your use of oil paint sticks have certainly given depth to the piece. I really like what you have done

  7. Your dancing puppets are lovely. And I like the way you have the green light emanating out of the stage. It also shows off your quilting well.

  8. Now that I have googled Paul Klee + Inventions + Images, I can see just how well your work relates to this segment of his work. All those pointy angles! Very nicely done, Phil.

  10. Phil thanks for putting up the painting which was your inspiration . The line drawings of Klees are quite quirky and full of humour . I loved your puppets and especially the expressions on their faces . Your background was interesting too and I like the effect that you got with the brush dyeing process and the stitching . A great piece.
