Kleeful - Inspired by "Architecture" 1923

I was inspired by the colours of Architecture (1923) and used them to create my own piece. The temptation with many of Klee's works, I found, was to reproduce them exactly as quilts. I tried to stay away from that. Kleeful is a textile collage on a felt background, covered with tulle and then heavily machine quilted. I ice-dyed many of the fabrics on vintage tablecloth and these fabrics came out amazing. Here are a few samples.

  1. Your ice dyed fabrics are amazing, and the result is a perfect combination of colours.

  2. As glorious as the ice-dyes are, you have surpassed their beauty with your own composition. The value contrast makes the piece, I think.

  3. I've never seen this depth of colour achieved with ice dyeing and you've used it to great effect.

  4. Another piece I would proudly hang on my wall. The ice dyes are scrumptious, how could you cut into them?

  5. The ice dhed fabrics you used are stunning as is the way you have used them in your piece. Klee loved colour and you have used your fabric to its maximum. It is beautiful.

  6. What a wonderful interpretation - this was right up your street, Helena. And those ice-dyes - to 'dye' for! Aren't lime green and mauve wonderful partners?! H

  8. I loved the way you did this . The ice dyed fabrics are ,in themselves ,so interesting . When you say you collaged them did you mean that you cut them up placed them on the felt, then stitched tulle on top to contain them ? The effect is textured in an exciting way and one wants to keep revisiting it

  9. Coming up the rear (sorry could not get to my computer all day & phone only good for visiting the site) I don't have much more to add but to add my love of it.
