Square Roots challenge

Landscapes of the Imagination, 16 x 16
Here is the piece I was telling you about.

Because of a change in the sizing midway through the initial layout, (yes never do this) I made the design much harder for myself to complete to my satisfaction. Hopefully in my next attempt at this new size I will not be fighting with such a dominant element running up the center, (the gold) in order to balance the final composition and will be thinking in square and not rectangle from the start. Oh well, I think it works as a surprise element here and the green and red move you around.

  1. Ha, ha - I know what you mean about changing midway - it's not a good idea (been there, got the T-shirt). I think the little cluster of colours towards the bottom right manages to balance the bold gold rectangle just right. The spread of the lime green is perfect.

Just as a matter of interest do you put your work in progress up on a 'design wall' and live with it for a while/days before committing to needle-punching? Do you find yourself trying this piece out here and moving that piece over a bit in a never-ending quest for the perfect composition? Have you ever pulled a felted piece off?

One day we will meet up and share our textile passions.

  2. Thanks for reminding me, Hilary to reinstate my design wall and to slow down the finish in my process. Our lives are a bit up in the air right now so it is important to remember the simple and most helpful things in your studio that one should not try to live without. Thanks for your thoughtful reply and I hope to meet you in person somewhere along the way.

    1. Grief - I am the last person to lecture as I either dive straight in the deep end (with regrets) or am the worst ditherer. I was just curious how you worked as the composition always looks so good and I wondered how you achieved that.

  3. I tend to work laying out the palette and sketching a bit to get a feel for the layout. As for checking the values I use the camera and a black and white scale on the computer. It is lucky with the felting that you can take a piece off without much trouble so it is a bit like collage . Just received news that my grandchildren will be moving to Ottawa which is a bit more than an hour by car. Pretty great!!

  4. That's a great tip - using the Black and white filter to check the compositional value balance of a piece. I must try it sometime. Lucky you with the grandchildren only an hour away - plenty to look forward to this year.
