Delft Canal

This is from a photograph I took this year whilst on a tour of northern Holland.  In Delft we climbed the spire of a church and could see the town laid out below us.  Throughout the town (and, indeed, throughout Holland) we could see canals of varying sizes, surrounded by trees and cobbled streets.  The water seemed the perfect colour for out latest challenge!

I've not quilted the water very much  (as you can tell)- and I can't decide if this was the right decision or not. What do you think?  There was a lot of weeds and shadows on the surface of the water, but I am trying not to be too literal in my translation of photos onto fabric.

  1. This is lovely, Linda. I especially like the grey fabric you have chosen for the paving stones. The lines look hand-drawn and add a nice element to the composition.

  2. Charming piece. Very evocative of Holland (but where's the bicycle? - only joking). Like the angle you chose.

  3. Love this piece. I am not sure if quilting is the answer of the water but I would say it is too solid in colour. If you added 'shading' it might then talk to you and say now quilt here.

  4. You certainly hit the colour spot on. I'm sitting here with the spool of thread blown up on my iphone, (and yes, I realize that the photos may not represent the true colour - it was a hard one to capture). The water would be hard to quilt - think it looks better as is. I like the way you did your trees - the effect is just right.

  5. It's so beautiful to see water with a vibrant colour. The archways are effective. I can see your dilemma about quilting the water or not. I would be inclined to add a little just to reduce the look of the water swelling.

  6. You have achieved a real sense of 3 dimensions here with the miniature textures and the shading really makes it work.

  7. I love your view from above and how you have interpreted the boat. Personally I would add some stitching to the water, but that is just me.

  8. i love this piece
i may have used a different fabric for the water but maybe not as your interpretation is not aiming to be realistic and that turquoise fabric is a winner
    a lovely piece

  9. I really like it - there is so much interest in it and I think you have really captured the scene well. I think I would have added some quilting to the water, but then again I can see why you haven't as I wouldn't be sure how lo do it best.
