 Inspired by the Casa Batllo

I found the glass mosaic on the walls of the Casa Batllo to be quite  interesting I especially liked the contrast between the angular shapes of the mosaics and the circles.

I stencilled the mosaic and made the appliqué circles from a piece of silk from my silk painting days

  1. I agree Jinnie. The contrast between the jagged mosaics and the circular 'plates' on the wall creates a sense of tension and movement - like the circles are drifting across the wall. LOVE that gorgeous dyed fabric you made the circles out of! Hilary

    1. The silk is even more gorgeous and lustreous in reality: the photos don't do it justice. It reminds me of abalone shells.

  2. This is so lovely, Jinnie. The colours reminds me of those pieces of sand washed glass I collect from the beach. Works so well with your silk paints.

  3. Good grief Jinnie did you make the mosaic stencil. Love the 2D effect you have created with the contrasting shapes.

    1. I used freezer paper for the mosaic stencil: it took me ten minutes to draw and an hour to cut out.

  4. Can't help but echo Phil's comment - I considered making a mosaic stencil but quickly gave up the idea.

    Wonderful colour choices.

  5. It's so hard to add comments later on - I just agree with everybody else. Love the colours and the idea of putting the circles on top.

    1. I'm finding the same problem about comments: perhaps I shouldn't leave it so late!

  6. A lovely piece Jinnie - very brave to do a stencil but very effective. It must have taken you a lot of patience and care to get them looking so good and love the colours of the circles

  7. The stencil was a brilliant idea for doing the mosaic Jinnie. Did you leave it on while you painted, and what did you use for paints? The silk circles finish it off beautifully

  8. I used markal paintsticks, rather than paint. I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if I left the stencil on whilst I painted, as without the stencil I wouldn't have been able to stencil the mosaic.

  9. Beautiful piece Jinnie. As you said, the silk fabric is too gorgeous as the dots. Clever idea to stencil the mosaics.
