Ice Berg

I found this subject quite hard, and didn't make a decision about what to make until a couple of weeks ago when inspiration struck. On our trip to the arctic we saw hundreds of icebergs, each containing a fragment of a glacier containing hundreds of years old ice - the perfect 'fragment'. My first attempt was a complete failure - I tried to cut the iceberg shape from my memories - and it ended up looking like a loaf of bread. For this attempt I used a photo for the main shapes - much better. Strangely, some of the actual icebergs we saw had very strange shapes - one looked just like a garden shed!

  1. Well, this was bound to happen when you have these amazing structures on your doorstep so to speak.

Wonderfully dramatic image - both awesome and beautiful. Makes you think about all that 'history' dissolving and being lost as they melt into the oceans...

  2. I get the feeling that you were a lot closer to one of these! Beautiful use of iridescent fabric and thread - it really glows.

  3. I like the way you have taken the shapes of sky, sea and ice and split them into secondary shapes, which I think adds interest. The sparkle is very fitting too.

  7. What a challenge to basically work in monotones of blue and white. The sky, water and ice has so much depth and texture. I couldn't imagine anything more difficult. You mastered it all beautifully!
