SEA URCHIN

I have titled this Sea Urchin as the idea popped into my head that I could use this colour after drawing up a piece, which I may add this was done in the first couple of weeks (the drawing that is), but only started the piece last week!  I had my computer on with the colour on the screen and went through my stash and eventually decided to use a selection of fabric that all seemed to be the right colour, so used most of them.  After completing the piece I realised I could have quilted it differently but it was too late, so here it is.

The background colour on the piece does not reflect what it actually is very well  - it is a lovely aqua which sets off the marsala.

  1. Very clever Patricia. Love your piece and the quilting. With the probabilities in quilting these days I find that often happens after the fact but it still works for me.

  2. Great idea, and I love the small curls on her face. Is it the background quilting you're not sure of? it works for me.

  3. Yes the background quilting - should have quilted bubbles which would have been more in keeping with the theme, but one is often wiser after the fact!

    1. I used a hand dyed fabric in a very, very light brown/salmon colour. I used a fine liner pen in a light brown and then red to draw in the lips and eyebrow and some of the eye. I then literally used oil pastels which I rubbed on my finger and very, very lightly rubbed the colours onto her face and smudged her eye in the same way. It is scarey when one has finished the piece and then start with the colour on the face - one slip and it can be too much!

  5. She looks like an impish sea urchin - I like her. The choice of background is a really good contrast and shows up the hair colour well. Quilting bubbles might have been tricky to put them in the right place - what you did is good.

  8. Perhaps a self portrait? Lovely, free and easy. There is no way I could do her face at the end....what if?

  9. Lovely Mum - As usual you have created a great piece of Art - interesting and colourful! When you're in NZ in Dec maybe you and Rosemary should work on yours together. :)
