Greek Village

Greek Village, 11 x 8.5

I find it difficult to work with white. Perhaps if I used more texture in my work I could make white more interesting. In nature, white often seems to reflect the colours around it, and then when white is shaded it becomes another colour entirely, like blue or violet or grey.

I've always loved the jumble of squares, rectangles and triangles presented by densely-packed villages, and when I found this image on the internet, I knew I had my subject.

Santa Cruz-de-Tenerife, 11 x 8.5

My first attempt at meeting the Lily White challenge, shown at left, was completed several weeks ago. Something of a departure from my usual Cityscape, it too was based on a "found" photo.  Which do you prefer?

  1. Both are good examples of your distinctive style, Heather. I like them both but prefer the Santa Cruz-de-Tenerife because it captures the architecture and flavour of the location better. I think the distinctive thing about the Greek Island photo is the texture of the roofs. So my vote goes to Santa Cruz.

  2. While I agree with Hilary about the importance of the roof texture, I prefer the Greek island piece because it is simpler and less busy. I love the way the stitching of the electricity lines on the right cuts right across diagonally and brings the whole piece together. I think you have captured the brightness of the sunlight beautifully in this piece.

  3. Both great but my vote goes for the Greek Village scene. I find the Tenerife one lacking in depth.

  4. Your comment about white in nature is so true, it is never really the flat white we so often see in fabric.
Whilst I enjoyed your foray into textured fabric when you first posted Santa Cruz, comparing it with your Greek village I now find that the texture distracts from the composition of the piece.
I'm not a traveler but prefer your Greek village piece because it aligns with my armchair tourist perceptions!

  5. I like your Greek piece better - a more sophisticated look. I think Phil hit the nail on the head.

  7. Greek Village would be my choice as there is more depth and a stronger focal point.

  8. I think the Greek picture wins - it's my favourite too. It's interesting that you can use blues and greys and still create a white picture. The electricity lines really do make the piece.

  9. My vote goes to the Greek Village. You have captured the scene beautifully and as has been said before, the elecricity lines bring it all together.

  10. I too prefer the greek village and I think it's because the Tenerife one lacks depth , which I hadn't noticed until Phil mentioned it
