Butterfly Effect - Fragments

Apologies to all - I had every good intention of posting my Fragments piece yesterday sometime. I only arrived back from the UK yesterday morning and then all the wheels fell off and was unable to put up my piece. Anyway here it is now. I decided to make this into a bit of a fairy story incorporating the Butterfly effect / Chaos Theory for a bit of fun!

"Once upon a time there was a beautiful golden butterfly that lived in the Amazon Jungle. It's wings were covered with the most wonderful colours. One day it flapped it's wings and all the colours flew off into the Universe creating Chaos (Chaos Theory)"

  1. I'd heard the theory that a butterfly flapping it's wings could change events on the other side of the world (causality?), but never this fable. Nice story. Was it a ready-striped fabric, or did you have to piece the colours together?

  2. What a lovely story. And beautifully interpreted. So carefully thought through from the background fabric to the rainbow colours fracturing and fragmenting around the universe.

Sorry you had a bumpy home coming after all the excitement of visiting family and the quilt festival - hope all is now OK.

  3. Did you create the starry background effect with stitch? Lovely impression of a night sky.

  4. My fragments were pieced individually using the Susan Carlson technique by drawing my piece to size and then placing a piece of muslin over the drawing and then tracing the design onto the muslin and then placing the muslin over my background fabric and placing each piece underneath the muslin to get it all in the correct position (described in Quilting Arts some time back). Very time consuming but perfect for this piece.

  5. For the starry background I used black fabric which had gold speckles and then free motion quilted it in a random star pattern

  6. Sometimes I think I live my life by the butterfly effect! Great interpretation and well executed.

  7. What a very clever interpretation of the theme!! Just a small action that creates a bigger effect...a small 12" quilt that "tells" a very wise story! Love it!
