Baobab Tree

Was this not a challenge and a half.  After a lot of procrastinating I decided to go with a photo of mine as my subject matter which fits in with the artist but would quilt it in the style of some of his paintings. My pic is this one of a Baobab tree taken while we were in Dar es Salaam.

My two Pierneef pics are .....

My piece is the following .......

This is a whole cloth painted with Derwent Intense Inks.Easy  dot tool used for the leaves on the tree. Quilted and then I went in with Markal/Shiva sticks to create the shading amongst the quilting. It has not worked as well as I would have liked but it was a risk worth playing with. It also definitely looks a lot softer in real life.  In a funny way I actually do like it.

  1. I love the way you have used the straight line quilting to reference the Pierneef painting, it works really well with the tree.

  2. I so agree with Linda's comment. The geometrics of the quilting complement the organic quality of the painted image. Love those dots!

  4. Phil you have used the geometric effect Pierneef used in some of his work to great effect and have captured the baobab so well. I am inspired by the way you painted the leaves and you have captured the essence of his work really well.

  5. I have a dot tool! Hope I can use it as successfully as you have. This is so cool the way you have combined two of his works.

  7. A whole cloth! You really have captured the mood of the painting. Hooray for the dotty tool! I love the idea of the quilting lines to mimic his 'fractured' sky. I'm sure the actual piece where the shadows are not so dominant is better and very appealing. Hilary

  8. I agree with the comments about your use of lines -a simple but effective way too capture his design. And lovely use of markals to get subtle colouring.

  10. I have always thought that baobabs are amazing trees and I so enjoy your rendition . The background is fascinating too and I like the blurring that you were able to achieve with the Inktense pencils . The dot tool is great !

  11. I agree with the others about the stitching and the use of the dot tool is perfect here.
