Klimt Waterfall

How to make a Klimt inspired piece without it looking like a copy?  Not sure I have succeeded but I had a lot of fun trying. I have taken every piece of material in my stash (in all senses of the word) that has gold and silver in and used them - cotton fabric, plastic, metal mesh and sheet, foiling, lame, sheers - you name it.  Add to that buttons and crystals.

Background is a hand dye from Frieda Anderson which I have screened printed.  Shapes fused in place and machine stitched. Satin stitch around the edge.

Looking forward to the next artist.

  1. A success! The Klimt inspiration is evident but subtle. Love it.

  2. Nicely done Hilary! I like your composition and the way you've integrated the gold on the background fabric. Is the sparkle in the lower right the shine off a crystal or something you've sewn?

    1. Well spotted. Yes, several crystals added (Hot-fix type).

  3. Very interesting piece using all kinds of surface design & manipulation. The white shapes with all the crystals etc & black & gold designs work so well on the background fabric. I am too conservative & would never have been brave enough to go that route. Need to experiment more.

  4. Oh, like the previous challenge, you have selected the symbols, never thought of that, very clever and original!

  5. Very clever Hilary - you have used his symbols with suble touches of gold which work so well with the background colour you have used. Your design has so much depth and is very different and so interesting I keep looking at it and finding different things that catch my eye. Well done. I love it.

  6. How did you manage to think of making a waterfall from Klimt's shapes done in white? Amazingly successful interpretation and especially as you included gold in the background design bringing in another Klimt element very subtlety. Clever . Wish I could be an 'outside the box ' person ! Rosemary

    1. I seem to have waterfalls on the brain as I have another on my design wall which is waiting for me to work out how to interpret the water with sheers. The rocks are done and there isn't a hint of Klimt in this piece.

  7. I love the printed background and like the way you've done all the shapes.

  8. How interesting that you framed some shapes in black squares and rectangles and other shapes in white oval frames! The contrast is multi-layered that pulls the viewer in for more detail. And all the while, you managed to get movement into your piece that adds another dimension!
