Montreal Skyline

Here is my latest effort using the approach taught by Liz Barton in the on-line course. First, the original photo, taken from the Musée des Beaux-Arts, from which a tiny detail was taken, middle-right of the photo...
...then translated into a line drawing and then a value study...
... and then realized in hand-dyed and commercial cottons, using fused shapes, outline and detail stitching. Perhaps the detail stitching on the golden dome-like shape could be darker to give it more emphasis?

I thought by making the focal point the lightest value, it would draw the eye. I was also trying to create something of an effect of light, reflecting off the upper surfaces but leaving the lower buildings relatively dark. Essentially a blue-and-orange colour scheme. It will be mounted on a dark-grey painted canvas like the others.

I am glad to have another piece (16" x 20") for the upcoming spring show of the Hudson artists.

  1. Like your interpretation of the section ... particulary bringing the farthest building forward and shortening the perspective... well done. Amazing pieces coming out of the workshop.

  3. nicely done! You've done well with the windows and the omissions. By that I mean you've removed detail that would have become distracting.

    When is the show?

  4. What a great series this has turned out to be! Loving the selection of muted colours and warm grays that you have become the master of and of course the subtle use of stitch drawing that give your transition areas such a warm touch.Great light! Congrats on all your succes with these!
