My butterfly is the Patricia Blue or Lepidochrysops patricia. The butterfly is free motion embroidery on a transferred photo (using TAP) , cut out, and then fused and stitched onto the background cloth which has been machine quilted. I will change the binding as it has 'cropped' the branches which is annoying me. I suppose I could paint them in?

Patricia Blue!
I read in amusement all the concerns about achieving the 'correct' blue in this challenge, knowing I would be faced with the same problem but in thread. I have also battled to achieve the correct hues in the photograph , but here goes .....................

Fabulous stitching! And yes go for painting your branches in, it's a technique that I'm watching Cynthia St Charles do this a lot - http://cynthia-stcharles.blogspot.co.uk/
ReplyDeleteAnother approach for the finishing that I might try next time is one that Colleen used on her piece, which is a "pillowcase facing", eliminating the binding . Your threadwork is stunning and the colour perfect!
ReplyDeleteI'm facing my small pieces a lot. This is just one tutorial - http://thesillyboodilly.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/tutorial-super-duper-easy-way-to-face.html I pin all four sides before stitching, which is a lot quicker!
DeleteYour embroidery is amazing. Is this a butterfly that you have seen It too is gorgeous. And you did well with the colour selection, including the background choice.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I have not seen it in real life and am not sure whether it is found my side of the country. It is found in SA.
DeleteYou have got the colour perfectly and love the way you have worked the butterfly. Your colours harmonize so well. Didn't know that a species of butterfly had the same name as me! It is a lovely piece Phil and your thread work is superb. I have been working on a piece for a Guild exhibition next year and am also trying thread painting on it, for the first time ever, and it is such fun. Well done.
ReplyDeleteWow! Amazing thread work! What a gorgeous butterfly and perfect use of the periwinkle.
ReplyDeleteSuperb thread painting! The wings shimmer. So much detail. Great choice. Hilary
ReplyDeletePerfect representation of the colour. Great thread painting!
ReplyDeleteYou didn't mention how you achieved your background...did you paint it? The scale is perfect. The thread painting on the butterfly is stunning and very realistic. WOW!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, though I agree about the binding. Love the colour and the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful detail in this piece!!! The tiny butterfly patterning in the background leaves really adds to echo and feature the beauty! To me it does not need the border.
ReplyDeleteexquisite thread painting. perfect technique for this subject! great choice of background
