Something Fishy

Well, Venetta, I think you scared a lot of us with your choice of Escher.  But that is what this group is all about - challenging ourselves.  Like most of us I have admired his work and draughtsmanship for ages.  I love the ones which metamorph across the page but eventually went for one of his tessellations.

The piece is raw edge applique on a whole cloth black background - commercial and hand dyed cottons.  It was a challenge to chose which bit to focus on and then how to execute interlocking the shapes.  But I thoroughly enjoyed the process and had fun.

Roll on the next challenge!

  1. You have done a wonderfully, happy, colourful rendition of Escher's tessellations. I too thought of doing one and using the same technique as you did. Not such an easy task but you have produced a really great example of his work, with so much colour. Love it.

  4. Excellent Hilary! Just the right amount of black peeking out. Well done. Seeing the design blown up gives a real appreciation for Escher's brilliance and imagination.

  5. There are few of us who could attempt this and get away with it. Once again your mastery of a technique makes your work a pleasure to look at closely.

  6. Love the colours and shapes of this tessellation which you have done beautifully . The difficult bit must have been to allow the black background to show around the shapes . Your ability to have succeeded with this is admirable . A super piece Hilary

  7. The black background works so well and the quilting adds definition to the shapes. I like it a lot.

  8. Hilary, I am so impressed with the results you got from on of Escher's more difficult tessellations! WOW!! Your detail, choice of fabric and placement of the figures gives your piece that feeling that the impossible IS possible!!
