Klimt - Big Brother is watching you...

As I said already in my self-introduction, Klimt is not exactly one of my favorite artists. But I took the challenge, and I found a picture of one of his drawings in one of my art books. Didn't want to have to search for long, and if working with an unpreferred artist as inspiration, it doesn't really matter which painting you use, that was my thought.

"Die Hoffnung" - Hope

I was mostly attracted by the circles on the robe, and took it from there. I had printed a fabric when visiting Ali George in Australia in November 2015 and wanted to use this. Recently I have been including pieces of a reflector fabric in some of my work, and instead of gold, this seemed an appropriate substitue for Klimt's glitter. Add some found washers, start playing around...

Then I thought the oval just looked too solid, and cut out a piece that could be added in reverse.

I added some stitching, fixing the washers and applique the reflector fabric - and then I decided I might change the orientation of the whole thing.

When it's dark and the reflector fabric is 'active', it looks like this, and could be called "Big Brother is watching you."

Although I am not exactly sure of the title yet. And might change the orientation back, if persuaded. I just have the problem that I had to finish before I will be leaving for Birmingham and my trip to the US day after tomorrow and needed to get this up before I leave...

  1. I like the way you introduced the spiral - it adds more interest and lightens the piece. And I think I like the oval horizontal better. I love the background fabric with it's circles and grids.

  3. The spiral is my favourite of Klimt's motifs, and I love how you have taken the theme and run with it. If agree with Dianne about the horizontal orientation of the oval.

  5. Using the silver and the washers makes your piece stand out especially using the spiral motifs and I also agree that the horizontal orientation of the oval creates a different and better design. The reflector fabric sounds very interesting - one learns something new every day. Your use of the background fabric with the circles and grids gives so much more depth to the whole piece.

  6. This mixed media design is so interesting . Like Dianne and Helena I prefer the spiral motif horizontal . Your printed background fabric is the perfect backdrop for the shapes in the reflector fabric. An inspirational piece. Rosemary

  7. I'm also fascinated by the reflector fabric. Is it used by cyclists and in similar situations of having to be visible on the road? Cutting the spiral out was a smart move. I also like the printed background and prefer the vertical format.

  8. The spiral motif definitely works better than the eye shape and I agree that it looks better horizontally. I like the printed background

  9. Exploring Klimt's use of shapes to define his spaces set him apart from many of his contemporaries of the time. Your use of background shapes and colors highlighted with using reflective fabric for the foreground shapes and light gives your piece such depth and interest! So glad to have you as part of our group!
