Charles at Waikari Station, NZ

I decided to continue using my photos from NZ, and from the moment I saw Charles Sheeler's work I had a specific pair of photos in mind.  These were taken on the Weka Pass Railway and were of the Waikari Station, just north of Christchurch.

My chosen picture from Sheeler was an obvious choice, it was probably the whole reason I choose him as our next artist.

I loved the way he had played with perspective and overlaid the features.  So here's my version:
It was a lot harder than I expected to combine the images to produce something that worked, but I'm very pleased with the final result, even though it's not completely finished yet (binding still to be sewn down).  I chose to do minimal quilting, just round the lines using an invisible thread.  I still think that was the right decision, but I'd be interested in other suggestions.

  1. I agree that it is harder than he made it look to overlay the buildings. I tried to to do something similar with my viaduct, but it just looked too messy, so I chickened out and just made it straight on. You have succeeded better than I did.

  2. You are right, it is harder than it looks! You did an excellent job...what were the steps you took to get the perspective and the transparency? You colors and quilting are all "spot on"!!

    1. I took the perspective straight from the photo, then mirrored the images. I had to move a lot of lines to get things to line up correctly. As for the transparency, trial and error, and a lot of crossing my fingers.

  4. You have given all of us a lesson in perspective and how to use it in an imaginative way. This is a typical South Island scene and you ,very successfully ,combined the Sheeler style with the NZ landscape. Super piece of work.

  6. That was very tricky! But you've done a great job - it all looks nicely balanced. Love your colour choices too.

  7. This piece was brilliantly put together. You certainly constructed this so well and I feel quite awestruck in the way you did this piece. A really great interpretation so well done - I think it is really great.

  9. I have to admit to a mistake, my piece is based on Waikari Station on the Weka PAss Railway! I'd forgotten where the photo came from, so went into exhaustive research mode using dates, my travel blog and goggle, and decided it was Glenmark Station. If only I'd just looked at the photo I would have seen it was the station at the other end of the line, i.e. Waikari. Not sure if I can edit the title of my entry - I shall give it a go.
