Oscar in black and white

This is my grandson Oscar at age 4 months, a few weeks ago. It's amazing how much it looks like him despite its simplicity. Here is the photo it was taken from....

  1. I thought I had scheduled this to appear but when it did not, I checked and found that it was just a draft. After all this time, I am still getting it wrong!

  2. Oh wow - how amazing. It is Oscar! Just goes to show how little you need to capture the essence of an image. This is such a strong piece, Helena. Very successful.

  3. I am reminded of your monochromatic portrait of Marie-Anne, Helena. Bold and beautiful! Have you considered making one of your thermofax screens from Oscar's portrait and using it for one of your Warholesque multi-colour quilts? Maybe using photos taken at different ages?

    1. Of course. I remember the other piece (http://12bythedozen.weebly.com/reflections.html ). And what about Lucy (http://12bythedozen.weebly.com/street-life.html ). Is there a black and white series starting here?

  4. What a great idea Heather! Thank you, I will put it on my "to do" list.... And yes it was inspired by my portrait of Marie-Anne in our reflections series. I had also done one of Kathryn a few years before, in green.

  7. It has worked so well Helena. Right to the white spots on the eye to give sparkle and life!!

  8. He is a cutie, from someone who was lucky enough to see him in person. Great job, Helena.

  10. It's amazing how little detail we need to completely understand a picture. Did you use any computer photo manipulation programs to get the black and white areas?, or did you just trace from the photo? Love it, and he looks gorgeous!

  11. Really great. So simple but captures the true essence of the expression on his little face.
