Malachite Kingfisher

Kingfishers are quite prolific around our part of the woods however our local resident is the Brownhooded Kingfisher. I chose the Malachite because it is one that has the most amount of 'blue'.  It has photographed slightly darker than in real life.

I have to admit I left this one rather late and I am not one hundred percent happy with it.  the idea was to have the look of a sketch lightly coloured in hence I have only stitched the blue and the white chin. the stippled background was a hasty decision based on lack of time. I might revisit in a few days and add some more (?) where needed.

  1. What a beautiful bird, and so nicely portrayed in fabric. I think the background might have been better with simple horizontal lines of stitching, but I love the delicate feel of the branches that he is perched on.

  2. Beautifully captured and leaving the background plain has allowed the colours to sing.

I recently saw close-ups of the quilt, Magnolia, by Sylvia Gegaregian which won at Houston this year. Have a look at the background outer border. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/126100858290371655/

  3. I like the charming simplicity of this piece. The graceful drawn line is the first thing I saw.

  4. It has a sense of belonging in one of those old ornithology books that British ladies did on their travels abroad! Your embroidery is lovely, and the tree sets him up very nicely - it's not an overwhelming presence.

  5. Charming little character. The sandy branches and background work well for our next challenge.

  8. 'Ek verlang.......' ('I long for.......)
One of our favorite birds - we saw them often near to where we lived in Pretoria.
would love to commission you to do something like this for us.

  9. He is beautiful. I spend a lot of time birdwatching and would love to find him in my garden, but not much chance of that here in France!. The quilt is lovely and I like the simplicity of the design.

  10. I like the contrast in textures of the bird. Hilary obviously believes you have time a plenty looking at the link she provided!
