5 + 1

This is my favourite colour combination: blue and yellow (very Monet).  I have made two pieces.

The fruit bowl
The first was more of an experiment and it wasn't a total success.

The background is a piece of furnishing fabric which I embroidered to create the look of Michele's table cloth.  I also broke the vertical lines to give the impression the bowl was standing on a flat surface.

The fruit is a a piece of hand dyed tea-bag paper given to me by a friend, Sally-Ann.  I tried to add shadow but have only succeeded in making them look like tennis balls - I've just realised they need the odd stalk!!!

So, not entirely happy with this, I decided to abstract the image more and came up with this.

5 + 1
Simpler, but I like it. The plate is a Java batik bought many moons ago and the background is a piece of 'Michael James' fabric that was brought out by RJR? also many moons ago.  The tea-bag fruit is backed with a yellow fabric as it is slightly transparent.  I played with various random and rigid ways of placing the fruit but settled on this one.  So, this is my offering: 5 + 1.

  1. In your first piece, I really like the way you embellished the striped blue fabric to make wallpaper. I hope you have enough left over to re-visit that idea and perhaps re-work it. The blue-and-white floral fabric you chose for the plate is perfect in the second one, suggesting china and complementing the fruit nicely.

  2. I do like the contrast in colour with your background, the plate and the fruit, as well as the lines in the background and the swirls on the plate. Really great Hilary.

  3. Your interpretation of the bowl is so much fun in number one and I find the threadwork suits this whimsical approach. # 2 is just beautiful and shows a real sense of humour in your work. I really enjoyed both of these Hilary.

  4. My favourite part of the first one is the zig zag bowl. Though the fruit do look a little like tennis balls (beautiful ones though!) I really like the piece. Great use of fabric in the second one.

  5. Both great and fun. I do agree that a revisit to the first one would be worth it as I do find it more interesting and quirky.

  6. I'm with number one too, though I love your choice of fabric for number two!
Please add some stalks (and their shadows) and show us the piece again! This is a very clever interpretaion of a still life.

  7. Two great pieces! I like the quirky fruit bowl, and the wall paper.

And the stylized second one. The plate fabric is perfect.

  9. i love the bowl in the first one but the second one appeals to me more.
i love the varying colors of the striped background, the design of the plate fits so well and is so real and i love the 5 + 1 fruits - quantity, postioning, color and all

  10. I love the first one. The second one is great, but I love the shading and the bowl shape on the first. Perhaps n the second the stark change in colours between the 'plate' and the background is too much and too much in the centre of the piece.
