Salt Cones

On our latest trip we visited the Atacama desert and the salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia.  This salt lake is about the size of Belgium.  Salt cones are scraped up and left to dry before being trucked off to be cleaned and marketed.  There is residual water that surrounds the cones and at sunset the colours are quite brilliant, both in the sky and on the ground.

and the real thing.

  1. I like the way you have exaggerated the colour in the sky. I find the warmth of the pink and red is a good contrast to the cooler colours of the foreground.

  2. You've really captured the essence of these salt flats. I've seen other photos of them and new what I was looking at without needing to read your explanation!

  3. I agree with Heather ... I like the way you have put your own edge to the piece by changing the sky. More dramatic!

  4. A very interesting piece shared with us all. Liked the contrasts very much and you have captured it so well - the design is excelent with the triangles of the salt and the ground complementing each other.

  6. I forgot to mention that I had fun as this is all layered sheers. There are three layers under the salt cones to try and achieve the right periwinkle. Depending on the light, it sometimes is right on, other times not

  7. Dianne this is such a beautiful stylized rendition of that photo. Adding your unique twist with the sky is magic. Hilary

  8. The organza was a good choice to replicate the luminosity of the picture.
