The one that got away

For those of you who expressed an interest in seeing my rejected Eggplant challenge piece, here it is for your viewing pleasure. A couple of people who have seen it (Dianne? Helena?) thought I could paint in some colour on the light gray background to make it work.

My first attempt was the same design, but using patterned fabric (dots, stripes, checks) and that one didn't even make it to the fusing stage, so it's not available for posting.

Please feel free to have at it!

  1. I am sorry to say but this one does it for me. I love it - it gives me more of the wow factor. I think it is the strength and amount of colour. I would not change or add anything.

  2. Heather, what was it that you felt was so bad that you couldn't use this one?
I love the choice of colours, the line of the solid boathouses with the detail of the fence counterbalancing it.
Was it the high contrast between houses and background? That doesn't bother me.
For me the piece is about the boathouses. I think back to the quote: PERFECTION IS ACHIEVED....WHEN THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO TAKE AWAY.
I'm glad you finished it off - maybe it will grow on you.

    1. I think there isn't enough integration between the houses, the sky and the water.

    2. OK. So how would you prevent this in future? Use a patterned 'sky' fabric as the background as you did with your Encore: Boathouses and add water? Would water have been enough on it's own? In which case would you be brave enough to paint in the water now as the others suggested?

      Interesting little exercise.

    3. If there was a stitch technique to darken the boardwalk a bit(right) and then a bit of paint to darken the left sky(left) in a fun way, it would form a frame for the red green focal.

  3. I guess I don't like to see the houses floating like that. Perhaps you could mask them and add texture to the water and to the sky. You can always resew the lines. But I do love the houses themselves.
