SOLANUM MELONGENA

I am afraid my subject matter is quite predictable , hence, the auspicious sounding title, however, my inspiration came from a piece of my 'break-down screen printing' fabric. Do you recognise it Hilary? It meant the construction of the piece would require minimal effort.

Even though there is quite a bit going on in the fabric I kept the quilting simple by first sketching in thread a young Aubergine (Egg-plant) plant and then filling in with vertical lines. The rest is very simple ... fused fabrics, stitching, shiva sticks and writing.

I found this challenge just that.  Having a colour and not an object or theme really pushes my boundaries which is going to be great.

  1. Yes, I immediately wondered if that was from our day playing at Tiggy's. It's perfect for the background and the perfect foil for your plump aubergine - excellent choice.

The stitched/quilted aubergine is a lovely subtle touch.

PS Like the change of colour in the binding too.

  2. Nice piece. I love the background, breakdown printing is so unpredictable and fun. I shall look at this more closely with the sun(!!!) is no longer shining on my computer screen.

  3. Your aubergine looks so plump and tender - amazing. But reality aside I love your fabric choice for this piece.

And I agree that the idea of the colour challenge is going to be challenging, more so than I first thought.

  4. Beautifully complicated background as a foil to the simple subject. I like the way you have detailed the leaves with stitching alone on the background, and the text adds a nice touch. Do I see the beginning of a series here?

  5. I, too, love the background and the added leaves and flower. Interesting how well the blue and gold enhance the purple.

  6. So gloriously fresh!!! The background shapes are picked up in the shape of the leaf and the baby eggplant is just bursting with life in front of blue and gold. Nice piece.
