Patchwork

This "quilt" was in the Renwick museum in Washington, DC and I thought it was a good follow-up to the wooden quilt link.  It's by John Garrett.  The Renwick is a lovely craft museum and has quilts by Nancy Crow and Michael James.  There are many forms of art - pottery, woodwork, sculpture, glass.  I really enjoyed my visit there.

  1. It's charming. Do I read it correctly that they are tiny little squares of needlework on different gauges of canvass? I see tapestries, needlepoint, ribbon work and I guess the squares and circles are solid pieces held in place by the ribbons? It looks as if it might have been quite big - a metre square?

  2. how absolutely gorgeous. i would love to be part of a challenge group where each one deconstructs and reconstructs the 'patchwork quilt.' i love this. thanks dianne. maybe after each one of us has taken a turn selecting a theme for our blog we could have this as a challenge for one project. how do you others feel? (and with permission of hilary of course)

  3. How beautiful. Vasarely did some very brightly-coloured paintings with a similar design.

  4. Pamela - I was wondering who was online! You don't need my permission for anything to do with this group - we go with the majority flow.

For the kind of project you are talking about - have a look at the ByDesign group -

Now I see Heather is there too - hi from England!

  5. Check out the work of Sonia and Robert Delaunay as well - great multi coloured circles and shapes. Hilary

  6. The piece is about 1 1/2 metres square. It's mostly metal - that ribbon work is metal strip. It must have been very hard to manipulate. You can see more of his work : http://chiaroscurosantafe.com/artists/9/3322/

It would be fun to do another single piece. Our banner is our first effort - and very successful I think

  9. Nice! Love the idea of a 'metal' quilt for one of our 12x12s. Maybe we could select all sorts of different materials for a series - metal, wood and plastic all come to mind.

  11. Further to this discussion, here is a website with work that relates to the design of this piece, all done in cloth. I'm not crazy about the designs of the individual squares, but I like the way the artist transitions the colours throughout the piece.

  12. An interesting site Heather her use of colour is amazing. It also flags up how uncomfortable the metal 'quilt' made me feel!

  14. Thanks Heather. I found the pics in her "journal" section fun to look at. And thus I enjoyed the content of the squares.
